About Google Web Fonts...

"Google web fonts is a project to ensure webmaster, designers and developers have free and easy access to a choice of rich, free, quality typography for their websites. Our goal is to create a directory of core web fonts that anyone can use. We believe there shouldn't be any financial barriers for the use of the technology websites are built on.

A web built with web fonts is a web that is more beautiful, more readable, more accessible and more open.

Free and open source fonts

All the Google web fonts are open source. That means that you are free to to use them in any way you want, independent of whether you're working on a private or commercial project.

The API serving Google web fonts is built on Google infrastructure that is fast, reliable and tested. We provide the service free of charge.

Where do the fonts come from?

We are working with many type designers to fill the directory with quality font faces that are optimized for usage on the web. If you want to contribute please get in touch. Popular Google web fonts can been seen on millions of web sites.

The Google web fonts team"

Has anyone started using Google Web Fonts, yet? Not all their fonts are great, some are okay, most are very amateur, but there are some quite nice. I'd love to hear what you guys think...

Indeed most are poor! However their are a few gems in amongst the collection! Still doesn't compare to premium vendors like TypeKit etc.

Note - when I open in Windows 7 it shows as a plain san serif font. Hopefully someone can fix this. I tried in Font Creator but didn't have success.

Maybe the ot version will work for you?

Could somebody please help me with this:

How do i stay updated with the google web fonts homepage?

The site gets updated once a week. When i use the "date added" order, it often shows less new fonts than were actually added (for instance: last week, the complete font count was 422, this week its 436, means 14 new fonts. the "date added" order only showed 11 fonts above the last one that was added the week before)

is there a program or a script to keep me up to date?

I'm using windows 7 too and I got the same plain san serif when I opened the file, but once installed, I got the right font both in Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. Try installing the font and open it in other applications.

I am doing like you, and am keeping track of the new fonts vs. the older fonts. I think the difference in the 3 fonts, is that they consider each style a new font. The font called Asap has 4 styles. So those extra 3 styles makes it 14 new fonts. I couldn't find any other way to see what is newest.

CaballoMrk,

thank you for this tip, but its not working for me. I followed the description to install Mercurial and copy-pasted "hg clone https://googlefontdirectory.googlecode.com/hg/ googlefontdirectory;" into the terminal. After that the terminal showed a lot of (at least for me) cryptic error messages, no download started (or at least i didnt see one). :(

BTW, congratulations for your new font Kaushan Script, looks great!

@mmmikey

Search Google for "Mercurial GUI mac" or "Mercurial GUI pc", so you don't have to use the terminal.

In the Mac I'm using MacHG

Does anyone know if Google Webfonts is still loading new fonts. I haven't seen anything new since early April.

AFAIK they are reworking some of the internals of the publishing system.

By the way, they are now fully integrated into Google Docs.

Thanks, I had a feeling you would know!

How do commercial font makers consider Google's efforts to eviscerate them?

I'm surprised that the price of professional fonts has gone to zero and I don't hear any out cry.

In fact, GWF has grown the market for commercial web-font distributors.

They are selling more than ever. In many cases re-selling the same fonts again, this time under a web-font license.

Agree... In my original post I mentioned how some fonts were poor and amateur... GWF has come a long way. Their fonts are much more usable (not from a technical standpoint) from an aesthetically pleasing POV.
